The gesta Romanorum

is a collection of stories from 13th and 14th century Germany, England, and France. These stories are often pretty funny and, despite the name, almost universally have nothing to do with the Romans. They were extremely popular and inspired authors from Chaucer to Shakespeare. Needless to say, I did not write these. These are just some of my faves.
